only the paranoid will survive….
the only way to find out is open it and drink, if fake, you give it back, if it’s great, enjoy…
An old discussion, even if it’s a 10.0 rum, are the 0.4-0.6 points compared to other achievable rums worth 20k? Even a collector needs to consider the premium compared to quality, availability, icon status. Prices seem to have reached the top.
I will never buy a rum I have a doubt on its authenticity.
Speaking of the price, the ultra premium rums are far from the top priced whiskies. One example :
Macallan 1926 Fine and Rare 60 Year Old 75cl / US Import

Because it recently became relevant again.
I’m trying to figure out the capsules. We’ve seen the one with the star pattern above (suspicious, imho). Now there is a reported case of fake Velier Diamond 1981. This one had a slighlty damaged capsule that was shown in the auction listing. I noticed this capsule top has 4 holes,
as seen in the picture. I went though a couple of Velier bottles (Foursquares, Hampdens and Caronis – I don’t have any Demeraras). They all have plain tops or 2 holes. None of them have 4 holes. Is this a giveaway or are there legit bottles with 4 holes?
Bottle in question:
Example Velier cap (Tryptich):
Just checked my Velier Collection and i also only have 2 holes in the top so far.
But i dont have any Velier Demeraras aswell.
Hi, there are Velier bottles with 4 holes on the capsule. I have already seen it. I don’t remember which and as I’m not home it should wait a bit.
I also only had two holes so far. I just asked some friends to check their still closed Velier bottles. I’ll report as soon as I know more.
I asked RA how they can tell fake from real bottles when I joined their site 18 months ago and this was their response…Hello Marc,
Sellers are required to ship their bottles either to our office in the UK or Germany so every bottle gets checked and verified by our team of experts. If there are any doubts regarding the authenticity we have a strict rejection policy in place.
wer’s glaubt
three Velier Demerara I just checked have two holes, the others still have the tax band on it that I don’t want to remove
Jup, two holes only at my friends’ bottles as well.
RA has requested the bottle to be returned and organized logistics on their behalf.
Let’s see.
Meanwhile, because I kept 10cl for me, I tried again with @lukasdrinkinghabits and we are both very sure that it was filled with a AH.Riise, sweet and spiced. I wonder how I on a first impression thought it might be a Jamaica rum, solid and not too bad definitely not a Diamond Velier 1981. The rest of the samples will go to FTG for further comments.
adding insult to injury…
Based on the other comments I would be very interested in the provenance of that bottle. I don’t want to summon the devil but you might be looking at a fake there as well.
O.k. we will taste it for you. Thanks
I know I’ve already seen it. I have to check my bottles, but I’m not shure I’ve seen it at home, it may also been somewhere else.
finally RA is crediting the full amount of the lot including commission. Likely being a Riise it obviously didn’t convince their experts.
I have to say well done by RA and professionally handled
