It’s about 2 infamous high ester rums from a totally different region meeting each other.
We were always so curious if that could work. So, we dug into the subject and worked until we found 2 matching rums.
The combination that did it for us turned out to be a (big part of a) cask of 2019 HD (HGML) and a (2.5 y old) cask of Reunion G.A. from S that was fully matured in an ex 1988 Enmore cask. (A cask we know well, as we bottled it a few years ago). We used the freshly emptied Enmore and filled it with G.A. from Reunion.
And you know what?
The H is not running the show. It’s great to find out that the Reunion has so much to offer in return that the whole balances really nicely. They are both unmistakably present.
The maturation in our ex 1988 Guyana Enmore cask adds a lovely touch of old style (wooden pot still) Enmore in the finish. Really surprising. We were happy to find out it hadn’t disappeared with all these big boy esters in the mix.
As our vision is that high esters need to be drinkable too, we bottled it at 52% vol, as we found that to be the perfect drinking strength without the product becoming noticeably reduced. It’s more approachable than you would fear, but you’ll still know esters were hunted
