I have held a few private sample tastings with good friends through the years. Though I can see at some point during the early evening hours, we start getting tired. We usually start at 17-18 in the evening, and start with the “lighter” rums, before moving forward. The max amount of samples we have run through, is 10. We also eat a meal before, and snacks in between. Anything you would do differently?
Thank you in advance
I usually do 7-8 depending on the ABV and the time required.
We also do the dinner first, then wait at least an hour before starting. I usually use chocolate, salt sticks and cheese as snacks as they can clean and enhance the palate
If you really want to try 10 different Rums, you should really be cautious about the size of your glasses. I would say 1-1,5 cl is completely enough to get a taste impression of certain rums. If you pour 2cl or say 3cl in your glasses and you go through various 60%er you will add up really fast on alcohol in your blood (and brain ).
Other than that try and make a longer break in between with some snacks, as you already do.
But all in all: if you and your mates are happy with the tastings in the past, why change anything? Just keep on trying new things, e.g. one rum of the evening is a blind tasting or trying out different rum styles (full evening agricole/clairin/cachaca…) to keep up the concentration.
Thanks for the input @Leo
We usually split 3 cL between 2-3 people and we start from around 45 ABV (forgot to mention this earlier). Just wanted input of others experiences
Thank you @KevinDK
Might go “down” to 7-8 (I’ve mainly experimented in the past between 6-10, maybe 11)
Might do dinner, have water and snacks ready and then take a few samples over some hours
I also have only 7 or maximum of 8 Rum with 2cl.
We have a break after dinner for 1 hour and start with rum at about 8pm.
The tasting takes ~ 3 hours and afterwards we sit together with an additional rum or cocktail until 2 or 3am,
We never really drink more than 6, preferring a beer or a cider afterwards. At some point, the tongue is just dulled, depending on the alcohol content and ester. But a little cheese in between usually does the trick.
So this will be the tasting for today.
Dealing with someone who isn’t very used to rum, I’ve decided to go from some lower abv to a higher, and mixing some unaged, aged and from different countries
And as I said: A few cheese cubes (something very simple, subtle) can help, especially for beginners, to neutralize the flavors a bit in between. With so many samples, I would definitely recommend that.
I actually bought a cheese variety pack, with simple cheeses for tonight. And a box of crackers
I hope the guys will enjoy that, and if they do, this will be the new standard.
Thanks to all for the advices!
Brillant advice from you all!
Had the cheeses in the picture between the samples, together with some crackers. After that, we went on to cocktails (G&T in this instance). All in all a great and fun night for all included
I won’t go too much into details of the rums, as I have rated each one on the app. Some were extremely tasty, others not so much my style
