Just recently opened a bottle of Doorly 14 that I bought in April when I was in Miami. Not anything overly exciting but glad to finally try it since I’ve always heard it was excellent value.

Doorly’s 14 will always be my reference point when it comes to Bajan rums :ok_hand: hard to beat in terms of value for money

8 is underrated for me

There are rums that, when tasted one day, have a specific taste, personality and flavor and which, when tasted again years later, have a completely different appearance and therefore another rating. What do you do in this case? Because the first perceived taste is not metaphysical but real and determined, therefore it is as true as the second. Of course, a more mature palate goes deeper and is a more accurate opinion, but that taste of the first time in my opinion is worth as much as the second.
Obviously I’m tempted to leave the second one and add the previous one in the footnotes, but also to leave the first one (if higher than the new one), how do you do it in general?

Every rum tasted is in a moment in time in one’s rum journey. And as your palate evolves it’s certain that’ scores will change. At this point, for most of us, cross tasting paints a more accurate picture because you can adjust scores between rums in comparison.
But a benchmark can always be a benchmark.
Doorly’s 14 would be about 8.5 for me nowadays because of that benchmark factor.
Just because that maybe a lesser developed palate could rate one of the ECS 4SQ rums lower compared to what us rum nerds would rate it.
I just feel that I should try to keep a level headed view in all this. Doorly’s 14 is an excellent example in the core range unsweetened stuff that’s also quite nice as à daily sipper.
Just my two cents. Nothing more, nothing less.

I find myself extremely agreeing with the first sentence, it’s part of the journey and the experience and it’s one of the reasons that makes the world of Rums so interesting.
I also understand the need to have points of reference and limits, in fact the doubt is precisely on one of these, tasting the RRL12 again, which was one of my absolute favorites (and one of the first serious overproofs that I tried), I don’t I feel it is so good and deep that it deserves the highest rating, so I was wondering whether to leave the rating from the first tastings or update it to the new one, what would you do?

When I sometimes update my tasting notes and also adjust the score I usually write a short note with the reason(s) why the score went up or down and by how many points.
This way I can somehow keep track of the scores history.

Indeed, that’s also my current method.
