I hope this question hasn’t been asked here before but I was wondering today which bottle from my collection I would choose if I had to keep only one.
After a few minutes of reflection, I think that for my part I would keep my NRJ Long Pond 2007 TECC (rx61).
It is neither my most expensive bottle nor certainly the best. But the memory of my first tasting of this rum and the slap it gave me at the time is imperishable.
For me, likely one of the old Silver Seals, RX3215, as they amazed me when first tried. It will definitely be a demerara. Not sure if it will be an old Cadenheads as they are out of the world but therefore to special to keep as the only bottle. Or maybe…
I‘d actually go with the Black Tot Last Consignment, or one of those super-precious CA Demeraras
Runner ups are Velier Damoiseau 1980, Caroni Single Cask Kirsch or Rumclub Rev 1994.
I’ve also considered J Bally 1999 (for its delicacy and balance), the better chairman’s and HV mhoba 2017 (I keep discovering so much and they’ll never get boring) or the monymusk 1984 (for breadth of flavors and complexity)
I would go for Navy rum, too, actually a flagon, as it does leverage six 70 cl bottles (you didn’t limit the bottle size ) but this is clearly among the types of rum, I enjoy most, it has perfect ABV level for me (~ 55%), a lot of complexity (thus, a lot to discover), it pairs well with cigars…
Many connected this 1 bottle thing to some fond memories they had in trying it first etc. I had this, too, with the flagon, digging through the wax seal, fighting with the massive cork, and then hearing the oxygen flowing into the bottle, replacing the vacuum that had built up, eventually pouring some liquid out that hasn’t seen any daylight for 50 years or so. It felt like an archeologist opening an ancient Egyptian pyramid for the first time
@ander_s recently asked my, what’s the ONE bottle for the desert island. I think it would be pretty much the same answer.
It should simply taste good and I can expect to enjoy the whole bottle. It must not be the most interesting rum…
On the shortlist are:
Velier Caroni 17 year or 21 year Extra Strong
Velier Foursquare Plenipotenziario
Velier Uitvluigt 1997 or El Dorado Diamond 1998
Neisson 2004 15 year
Rhum Rhum Liberation 2015 Integrale
Rom Deluxe New Yarmouth 1994 or Appleton Hearts 1999
Going by numbers it would be the Neisson as it is #2 on my tasting ranking. #1 is the Diamond 1996 and I don’t have a bottle.
If i could choose any bottle i would take a Diamond 1996 Full Proof … if it has to be a bottle that i m actually owning, then it would be the El Dorado Diamond 1998 CBH
Which bottle to keep? Most likely some unicorn bottles.
Which bottle to drink if there only is one Rum for me? Maybe something like RX12384 for its easy-sipping mentality. Also suits every mood.
Or some superb Agricole with low % that can also fit in a lot of nice summer evenigs such as RX787
Yes and no. To me it’s the most complex and minty yet most balanced 2003 out there but just my personal preference. The one you mention is 2 years older so a bit more woody and less fruity and minty in comparison. I especially enjoy lychee and citrus and passionfruit black tea notes next to the mint if you dig deep enough into it!
