Yeah, like the 1885 Saint James. I think it might be true for the past but now we are sure collectors exist. What happens to our rum shelves after we die?

Same for me and I think that’s quite normal. I still consider it a “selection” rather than a collection because I still intend to drink it all at some point.

I see your point, but archiving is usually just a consequence of a rum collection, rather than intention. These rums will wind up somewhere, sometime, at unnecessarily inflated prices, because all of the previous owners want their share. And the higher the prices will get, the more unlikely it will be that one of the buyers will open them. Then the prices will be determined by rarity and age rather than quality. And until someone will eventually open them in some distant future, they will be lost and “wasted” for the time being at least.
Me personally, I’m not so fascinated by “time travel” through drinking a rum from a different age. Despite the prices still rising, I think we really live in the golden age of rum since we can share and discuss so many rums with different flavour profiles here. There are so many rums being released that we can barely drink them all, at least my sample supply never seems to end since I joined here. 
Regarding archiving rum history, I think what Elixir Distillers have done with the Black Tot Last Consignment is the proper way to do it. I still have a sample from GRF that I need to find the right time and mood for to explore.

Ich mag beide Seiten…
Trinker weil sie den Stoff genießen und eine tolle Zeit damit verbringen.
Sammler im gewissen Maße…denn man sollte sich schon bewusst sein ohne Sammler (ich zähle mich auch im Maße dazu) würden sehr viele Genießer einige der besten Rum’s nie probieren.
Natürlich sollte das ganze im fairen Rahmen bleiben.
Mir wurde auch schon des öfteren unterstellt das ich Kohle mit Rum machen will … wenn man mich allerdings kennt und verfolgt was ich abgegebe wird schnell zu dem Entschluss kommen das ich selbst ältere Sachen gerne an gleichgesinnte zum UVP abgebe … einfach weil ich es kann und auch möchte .
Zum Thema kohle mache bzw Investieren… seien wir ehrlich wer hat nicht schon einmal etwas gekauft im Gedanken das könnte mir den nächsten Finanzieren.

Ganz ehrlich ist es mir inzwischen egal, ob jemand handeln will, trinken oder sammeln. Ist zwar ärgerlich, wenn dadurch manches unerreichbar wird, aber so ist das Leben… Vor 10 Jahren kannte ich noch nichts anderes als Havanna Club und Bacardi. Und wenn es so wird wie der Whiskey Markt, warum nicht - mehr Anerkennung ist doch auch für uns ein bisschen Bauchpinselei als “Experten”, und das tut doch auch den Destillen (solange sie nicht den internationalen Getränke Konzernen gehören) und damit auch den Herkunftsländern gut.
Meine “Sammlung” besteht auch aus Flaschen die ich mir zugelegt habe weil ich irgendwie mal von jeder guten Destille ein Exemplar haben wollte. Inzwischen es aber so dass es einfach zu teuer wird, und ich mit Samples besser komme. Auch besteht gar nicht mehr die Chance, dass ich das alles trinke, aber vielleicht ists auch als Geschenk oder so geeignet. Ob dafür in 10 Jahren wer Geld ausgeben würde… Wer weiß. Drauf spekulieren tue ich nicht.
