This mezcal currently in the cocktail cabinet. It’s okay for cocktails.
But I like “hombre marginal” from The Whisky Jury much more.
Alipus San Juan XX Anniversario
Kann dir gerne mal ein Sample zukommen lassen.
Great idea @Leo
Cocktails ideas : Mezcalita (margarita with Mezcal instead of tequila, of course. And Negroni with Tequila.
For the tasting notes, difficult i am a beginner for agaves but here my notes :
Mezcal PALENQUE - Juan Hernandez
Tobaziche - 46.6%
Nose: smoky; hay, stable; horse manure
Palate: smoky then very quickly vegetable brandy, ancient agave…
Finish: slightly bald, on the terroir
8.2/10? Nice but quite strong.
Mezcal Palenque - Alberto Ortiz
Espadin - 49%
Nose: farm hay but relatively sweet, a little more vegetal. maybe a slight sugar that comes off.
Palate: brandy, sugar
Finish: herbaceous, hay
8.4/10? Nice and fresher / gourmand. Less on the manure.
Nb : notes auto translated from french dont know if its very clear.
Will try to take the next ones soon !
Cheers
Some notes I made on the 4 first Mezcals I tried from the split made by Leo:
Velier Mezcal Palenque Alberto Oriz Tobala 50,1%
Nose: liquid leather, very intense. Good smokeyness. In the background is a ground sweet note of fruit. Like a sweet version of a lemon. Also grassy. Seems to have the best balance of these four.
Taste: smoke, melon, grassy, bell pepper, quite tasty
Finish: on the green side with bell pepper and green beans (lightly cooked), smoke comes back now and then. Long finish. Bitterish in a nice way.
Conclusion: impressive stuff. I like it. Right now I will give it 8,5/10 but I know nothing about Mezcal
Velier Mezcal Palenque Alberto Oriz Espadin 49%
Nose: also a leathery smell but less intense than the Tobala. Here that sweet lemon also comes round but there more of the sour of the lemon. A milder perhaps more bubblegummier version of the Tobala.
Taste: profile on the nose continues. Also here less smoke than Tobala. Something lemony indeed and the smoke comes back every now and then. Feels softer and more accessible. The flavor might be more balanced than the Tobala.
Finish: quite green but between sweet and bitter. Also a long finish. Arguably better than the Tobala.
Conclusion: gonna rate this 8,4/10 since I love this one as well but it is a bit less muscle than the Tobala.
Velier Mezcal Palenque Gregorio Martinez Espadin 50,7%
Nose: smoke, leather, grassy. Intenser than the Oriz Espadin but not close to the Oriz Tobala. Also something chemical like paint thinner. Not necessarily fruity.
Taste: smoke, paint thinner and some sweet fruits. Feels a bit hot, alcohol perhaps less integrated than with Oriz.
Finish: remains more stingy, towards the green side with green bell pepper and something like non sweet corn. Long finish with a slight green bitter.
Conclusion: this one scores 7,5/10, a great green bouquet but it could use some sweet notes like Oriz.
Velier Mezcal Palenque Juan Hernandez Tobaziche 46,6%
Nose: Smoke, leather with a little fruit. It grassy and it has a certain Christmas smell that I cannot determinate yet. In terms of intensity this is second after the Oriz Tobala.
Taste: vegetables grilled, bell pepper, lettuce, onion and the rest of the vegetable shop on the bbq. Plenty of smoke to help along.
Finish: keeps being smoky, green bell pepper. Lasting taste without going bitter.
Conclusion: for me a unique taste and I like it. Could use something on the sweet side to balance it 8/10
Thanks @Leo for making this split possible! I was happily surprised with the quality of these releases.
