With a 600 liter cask it is not unreasonable but calculated at 40% or even less, which is of course what caroni sold at the active time as OB. Plus it is of course written in anger and disappointment so it might took some inaccuracies…
Still a stretch, no?. They say 70 million bottles of blended rum from 18.400 casks. That’s like 3.8k bottles per barrel. And from what I’ve seen on photos we’re mostly talking bourbon barrels. Doesn’t add up, imho.
Sure, I think you can really forget any relation on what on earth the author thinks what money there was to make. He is exaggerating to make his point.
There is a lot of valuable information about what actually was going on and what the stock, heavily evaporated and deemed basically pretty worthless was going out for.
It still gets me to conclude that you could have not produced this style with a profit
Sehr, sehr gute Entscheidung, Serge!
My 2 cents on Caroni.
My story is a little bit different from common.
Usually people start tasting commercial rums, then if they get intrigued start learning and buying higher quality products.
I discovered rum directly tasting a Caroni 1974 in 2009.
It was a present we bought for a friend (at 70€ !).
We opened that bottle after dinner at a restaurant not knowing anything about it.
Nobody had experience with rum or whisky.
We were all totally amazed by the taste of leather and tobacco it left in our mouth !
I woke up next morning with the same taste on my tongue. It was incredible.
That night started my passion for Caroni and rum.
This is to say that for me Caroni is not an hype.
Caroni is an unique experience that is becoming more rare/expensive every day.
I found other rums I like, Foursquare among all but even if they are nice, polite and complex they are another family from Caroni.
This is probably why I found agricoles rum too delicate.
I refer to Velier’s Caroni. I tried Bristol Caroni 1974 and I found it had only the defects and was far from the harmony, power and complexity of Velier 1974.
Happy tastings.

Nice story !
Beginning your journey into strong alcohol with a Caroni 74 it’s highly unusual !
What other Caronis did you loved ?
After staying on 74 for 4 bottles, I tried 94 but at that time I remember I found it a delusion in comparison with the older brother. I was unexperienced and used to the immense quality of 74.
Then I missed all the 80’s I hope to taste one in the future.
I am in love with 96 Caronis, Fire, Trespassers, Last.
I had the great luck to be at the Paradise tasting and it was best experience ever! Top notch 1996 Caronis are there.
I enjoyed the yellow 23 of 1994 too.
Now I can afford the 21 1996 that is very good for the price.
