Yup I see the same thing. Splits seem mainly European and I live in Scotland. The main problem seems to be the postal costs. They seem to be fairly high. Although I’m happy to pay a higher cost if it’s for something special.
As for splitting and send to the EU the cheapest I have seen it is £8 or 8Euro is close enough. Thats with insurance. Which seems to be fairly cheap.
As for swaps …. just asked that very same question a couple of days ago … there’s no barter system in place. So money is your trade. I did tip my toe into the ‘bottle split’ water and put a decent rum up earlier but only had one taker so toying with the idea of whether it is worth splitting. It may of course be that as a newbie there’s some anxiety … so reflecting on this. Might be worth considering posting to see if there are other Brits on here.
Thank you for your reply. Yes I should have clarified that it would be within the UK as international postage cost are prohibitive for sure.
For swap I think you just make sure what’s being traded is for similar value, personally I’d rather swap a few at once otherwise that’s a lot of faff just to send 5cl for example.
I need to tidy up my notion doc i use to catalogue my spirits before I can share it to show what I have to trade.
Yes, there is also certain restraint towards newbies making the splits, especially expensive ones, as in the past some scammers were present in the community…Some of members lost some money…et.
This is interesting … Ok well perhaps the way to do this will be to send the Samples first and those that don’t pay get named and shamed. I’d be happy to shoulder the risk until people get to know me.
May I suggest, that with more expensive bottles(over 300 €), you offer 2 cl or 3 cl samples.
And , of course a German hub would be welcome, perhaps (don’t be mad) @Rumurmel, who does a lot of expensive, quality splits lately .
I would certainly take 2/3 cl, if these 2 suggestions were available.
Well as I said … i will make the first step… so if people want to connect with you and then you can tell me how many you need I will send them …. they are ready to go now.
No. I tend to buy direct. I use Masters of Malt, Whisky Exchange and other direct sales. Such as direct from Macallan for some of my whisky collections. In fact I tried to buy something on here but the supplier (partner shop) had mis-priced the Caroni I was after so my order was cancelled. But I bought a few of the new Rums that were offered on here today as well. I do use some auctions to track down something very specific but generally I want the re-assurance a Shop provides.
I’m in England. Been on here for a couple years. I haven’t got round to doing a split yet (too clumsy and would end up spilling the rum) but I have purchased samples on multiple occasions. It feels strange at first but this forum has goodwill like no other- if people can, they will help you out. The only downside is the repercussions of Brexit, expensive delivery and if you purchase from most places in Europe significant vat and duty added. If you have any questions let me know…
