Great idea! Thank you for this proposal Lukas.
They are talking about a site that could offer their books for sale. We could make a list of everyone interested and then contact them to see if they would consider ordering this book.
If it’s yes, we’ll make a group order (above 1000DKK, free delivery in EU).
Matt writes, that the European supply will start in spring 2023 earliest.
If we don’t want to wait that long, we’ll need to ship the books from the US.
I’ve calculated a few orders with a lot of books. <20 Books the shipping costs are still more than 20$ per book. Perhaps we can talk to Matt directly and ask if he knows how to optimize the shipping regarding package size.
We can also add Minimalist Tiki to our collective order for those who don’t have the book yet. From my perspective, it’s a highly recommended rum cocktail book - better than the praised smugglers cove from my point of view.
Ok, so with this positive response, I think we should try it.
I changed to Threads Title and added a participant list.
Please write how many copys of which book you want to have and I’ll add you to the list
edit. We don’t need to hurry. This Participant list isn’t binding, but it makes it easier to estimate the volume. After we know how many books we might order we can calculated the shipping price/talk to Matt and see if people are ok with the shipping.
Are we sure a collective order is the right way to go? As I unterstand it, weight is key when shipping across the ocean. So the more people jump in, the more expensive it gets, thereby defeating the original plan (also true for ordering Minimalist tiki at the same time).
Or is there a “sweet-spot” somewhere? Also: Import tax and duties. Also: No private person needs 20 books, you’re gonna have a hard time explaining that to customs (danger of beeing seen as undeclared commercial activity).
Sounds to me they’re working on getting it distributed in Europe anyway. Yes, it would make a nice Christmas gift, but is it really that urgent not to see what solution they come up with?
I don’t want to rain on your parade, I just don’t see these points covered well enough to actually execute this idea.
I tried several combinations to find this sweet spot. I wasn’t able to identify it - but it got cheaper per book with bigger quantities. I guess, we should talk to Matt. In the past he wrote, that the cheapest shipping was a collective order for Minimalist Tiki (with more than 20 books if I remember correctly)
You are right about the European distribution. We don’t need to hurry. In the case of my copy of minimalist tiki, the book price at zeewijck.nl was much higher than in the US, so the price advance of the European distribution wasn’t too big. eventually, things will get better, if he can actually send a whole container or something to Europe.
The sweet spot is 15 books, but things don’t get worse - lowest price was reached with 50 books. So you can calculate with max. 25$ shipping per book instead of 65$ with an individual order
This is only calculated with the new book. Maybe it is heavier than Minimalist Tiki and the calculation differs a bit.
Maybe with a huge order and an individual calculation with Matt, things can get better (but I won’t put my money on it)
Edit. Just tested it. The Shipping of Minimalist Tiki is significantly cheaper
15 Books of Minimalist Tiki come with 180$ shipping so only 12$ per book instead of 25$.
For our joined collective order we possibly need a mixed calculation.
Thanks for your effort so far I do think that contacting Matt will probably become a good option once there will be a decent overview of the total orders.
Minimalist Tiki is 35$ dollar in the US. With the cheapest collective shipping it is 47$.
At zeewjick I paid 50€ for the book and additional shipping cost. So at least for Minimalist Tiki, things didn’t get cheaper with European distribution
